STATEMENT OF SUPPORT TO USC-CFIU
Dakateo (Damdaming Katoliko sa Teolohiya – Catholic Theological Society of the Philippines) is an association of professionally trained theologians who envision a just and inclusive church and society through theological research, dialogue, and solidarity with the vulnerable sectors of society.
We, the members of DaKaTeo, fully support the endeavors of the College Faculty Independent Union (CFIU) of the University of San Carlos, Cebu City, in promoting the welfare of the academic personnel. In particular, we are one with the faculty union in its decision to ask for the preventive mediation of the National Conciliation and Mediation Board of the Department of Labor Region VII.
The Christian university is a privileged setting for the establishment of God’s reign of freedom, justice, and equality. The Kingdom vision challenges the university to foster labor and management working relationship that conforms to the gospel norm of discipleship of equals.
The Catholic social doctrine in fidelity to the Kingdom vision has consistently affirmed the vital role of unionism to advance workers’ rights grounded on the principle of the priority of labor over capital.
We hope and pray that the hitherto existing differences between CFIU and the USC management will be amicably settled so that God’s reign will shine in its splendor within the university for others to see.
